CALL TO EXECUTIVES - The Walk Around

Executives, when was the last time you took a walk around the office and spoke to your employees?  Some do and some don't.  From my work history, I have experienced both, and I prefer a leader who will take the time to ask if I have what I need to get the job done.  A leader is someone who is perceived as being concerned with all parts of the business and this includes employees.

Executives are probably thinking that's why I hired managers.  To me, that's not a trait of a good leader.  We employees are your company.  We are the ones in constant contact with your customers and clients.  We sometimes experience roadblocks that prevent us from doing an efficient job.  Maybe if you knew about them, you could improve the process.

Don't forget, the manager's job is to make sure everything gets done on time.  Managers may filter and soften what is really happening.  Hiding issues causes more problems.  It results in a lack of trust and motivation between staff and management.

Executives, talk to us.  Just say "Hello, how is your day going?" and really listen to the reply.  We know the day to day business.  Some executives are unaware what it takes to do the job.  I understand how busy you are and want you to consider extending your interest to how we accomplish our responsibilities.  May I suggest you watch the TV show Undercover Boss.  The executives learn the value of even the seemingly menial positions such as directing customers to the proper person or helping solve issues quickly.  But, you don't have to go to a reality show to discover what makes your company tick.  All you need do is communicate with your staff.

When you take the time to walk around, it verifies that we are an important part of the success of the company and that our expertise is appreciated.  The mere act of walking the floor will heighten our morale and boost productivity.

Are you putting as much energy in knowing your employees as in knowing your customers?
